Hatch, New Mexico is known to be “The Chile Capital of the World.” We’re not sure that everyone in the world actually knows this, or if it’s just the locals living in Hatch, but either way, they embrace it to the fullest. Hatch is everything chiles. From restaurants, to shops, to street decorations, they live it up, which is great for tourists to gain the whole experience.
Like nothing we have ever tasted, two opposing forces combined in one cup.
We first learned about Hatch, NM while watching Anthony Bordain’s “No Reservations.” It’s one of those shows that’s a go-to agreeable show, and Hatch was featured in the Southwest episode. Bordain ate at a restaurant called “The Pepper Pot” with the town mayor to learn all about the world famous chile capital.
In case you ever find yourself in Hatch, NM– here’s our rundown and reviews:
#1 Restaurant in Hatch– The Pepper Pot!
#1 Place to get a good drink in Hatch–Sparky’s!
We also had to have a few souvenirs from Hatch, so we found a local Chile shop that served as a good tourist trap with long strands of Chile’s drying out front. We got a hot pepper jelly and a sand-wich sized baggie full of green chile powder (you know, for the El Rojo beverages that are now going to become a staple in our diets).
If you’re in New Mexico, take the time to venture south to Hatch. Your tastebuds will thank you.
Sidenote–we did manage to get to Hatch safely, even though I took a couple of hours at the wheel. Curt’s a rock-star for driving as many hours as he does. The favorable weather conditions and the lack of things to hit in New Mexico made for a successful first flight out for this girl.
More adventures tomorrow…
